Trump's 35% tariff will severely affect Bangladesh's global competitiveness: CPD
Dr Fahmida warned that the impact of the tariff would extend beyond the ready-made garment (RMG) industry

The newly announced 35% tariff on Bangladeshi imports by US President Donald Trump will threaten the country's global export competitiveness and pose serious challenges across multiple sectors, said Dr Fahmida Khatun, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD).
"It will be difficult for Bangladesh to stay competitive in the global market once a 35% tariff is imposed by the US on its exports," she told The Business Standard.
"Doing business, particularly in exports, under such a high tariff regime will be extremely challenging for Bangladesh," she added.
Dr Fahmida warned that the impact of the tariff would extend beyond the ready-made garment (RMG) industry.
"It will ripple across multiple sectors - from the backward and forward linkages of the RMG industry to banking, insurance, and the broader trade ecosystem," she said.
The economist also said the interim government should have included representatives from the business community, the largest stakeholder in this issue, but the government acts merely as an enabler.
