International Biotechnology Conference 2025 concludes at BRAC University
The two-day International Biotechnology Conference 2025 (IBC 2025) concluded at BRAC University in Merul Badda, Dhaka, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and showcasing emerging trends in biotechnology research and application.
Professor Dr. Md. Sayedur Rahman, Special Assistant at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, delivered the keynote address. He underscored the need for scientific advancement and social progress to move in tandem and called for leveraging intelligence, resilience, and purpose to address the nation's challenges and gaps in research infrastructure.
Professor Mahbubul Alam Majumdar, Dean of the School of Data and Sciences, highlighted how biology, technology, and computational capacity are increasingly converging to address real-world problems. Dr. David Dowland, Registrar of BRAC University, noted that the conference aligns with the university's commitment to impactful research and fostering intellectual exchange to counter brain drain.

Organised under the Biotechnology Programme of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences within the School of Data and Sciences, the conference explored biotechnology's role in addressing global challenges.
Over 1,000 scientists, researchers, academics, and students from Bangladesh and abroad participated, strengthening networks across academia, public health, industry, and education. The conference featured two plenary sessions: From Bench to Breakthroughs: A Lifetime Journey in Biotechnology, which reflected on researchers' contributions in agrobiotech, medical physics, and environmental science; and Reimagining Biotech: Building Startups, SMEs & Private Sector Pathways for Biotech Graduates, which examined the link between science and entrepreneurship.
More than 100 presentations were delivered across 14 thematic tracks covering healthcare innovation, agricultural biotechnology, environmental sustainability, and computational biology. Poster presentations provided a platform for students and early-career researchers to showcase their work and engage with peers and mentors.
The event concluded with a cultural evening and an awards ceremony recognising outstanding contributions to biotechnology. Dr. Md. Sagir Ahmed, Director General of the National Institute of Biotechnology, and Dr. Md. Firoze H. Haque, Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at BRAC University, attended the closing ceremony. Dr. Munima Haque, Convener of IBC 2025 and Director of the Biotechnology Programme, delivered the closing remarks.
