Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Azaz said Tk100 crore has been allocated for the development of drainage system and road construction to reduce public sufferings in the newly added 18 wards.

He said this while inaugurating a newly constructed road at Dakkhinkhan in the capital today (7 May).

Azaz said in the initial phase, the roads have been made 30 feet wide.

Later, those would be converted into 70 to 100 feet roads, he added.

He said there are three rail crossings at the connection points with the Airport Road in the new 18 wards, and work on building three flyovers at these three rail crossings will be started in the next fiscal year.

In the first phase of the development work of the new 18 wards, 25 kilometres of road construction has already been completed and the drainage network of these roads has been completed, he added.

Replying to a question of reporters, the DNCC administrator said that auto-rickshaws designed by BUET are being prepared to bring in operation within the next month. Training is being arranged for auto-rickshaw drivers too, he added.

After training, he said, a certain number of auto-rickshaws will be allowed to ply in Dhaka city with valid licenses. There will be a fixed chart for fare and a designated parking space, he added.

DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Md Moin Uddin, Additional Chief Engineer Mohammad Arifur Rahman and project-related persons were present at the time.
