Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to take a stricter stance against sexual harassment and rape, ensuring swift investigations and timely submission of reports to the court, said Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today (9 March).

He made the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting the child rape victim from Magura at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka.

The adviser inquired about the child's treatment and directed the hospital authorities to ensure the highest level of medical care, according to a press release issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Earlier, on 6 March, after learning about the incident, the adviser had contacted the victim's mother over the phone and assured the family of the government's full support for the child's treatment, it said.

The child was transferred to CMH from Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better medical care yesterday (8 March).

Speaking to the reporters, Adviser Jahangir said, "A case was filed naming four accused in connection with the rape and attempted murder of the eight-year-old child. All four accused named in the case have been arrested."

"I have instructed law enforcement agencies to take a strict stance against sexual harassment and rape. A list of all reported violence against women is being compiled, and I have directed that investigations be completed swiftly so that reports can be submitted to the court without delay," he added.

The adviser also assured that perpetrators of recent rape cases would be brought to justice and given exemplary punishment.

"Women should be able to carry out their responsibilities freely and fearlessly, both at home and outside. Anyone attempting to hinder them or engage in violence will be brought under the law, and there will be zero tolerance in this regard," he warned.

Jahangir urged everyone to be aware and vocal against violence towards women. "We must uphold family, social, and moral values to prevent such crimes."
