Bangladesh improves in Global Terrorism Index
South Asia holds position of most terrorist-impacted region throughout the last decade

Highlights:
- Terrorism impact in Bangladesh declared "Low" on global terrorism scale
- Bangladesh's terrorism impact score stays below its neighbours India and Pakistan
- Bangladesh among South Asia region's improving nations
Bangladesh has demonstrated a reduction in the impact of terrorism, improving to 35th position from its 32nd place in the 2024 index, according to the 2025 Global Terrorism Index (GTI) published today (5 March).
The impact of terrorism in Bangladesh was reported to be "low" on a terrorism scale as per the latest edition of the GTI, based on terrorism activities in 2024.
The GTI has been providing a comprehensive summary of the key global trends and patterns in terrorism by the Institute for Economics & Peace, a global think tank headquartered in Sydney, since 2012.
Bangladesh even saw a lower impact of terrorism than India, Pakistan and the South Asian regional average in 2024.
Bangladesh scored 3.03 on the 2025 GTI index, where a score of zero indicates no impact and 10 represents the highest measurable impact. This placed the country at 35th among 163 nations which were placed in 100 spots in the report.
The latest position is an improvement from last year's 32nd place.
The GTI is the most comprehensive resource on global terrorism trends and uses multiple factors to calculate its score, including the number of incidences, fatalities, injuries and hostages, and combines it with conflict and socioeconomic data to provide a holistic picture of terrorism.
The number of countries recording a terrorist attack increased from 58 to 66 in 2024. This reverses nearly a decade of improvements, with 45 countries deteriorating and 34 improving. The four deadliest terrorist groups intensified their violence in 2024, driving an 11% rise in fatalities.
Burkina Faso remains the country most impacted by terrorism this year, despite attacks and deaths falling by 57% and 21% respectively.
A fifth of all terrorism deaths globally were in Burkina Faso, followed by Pakistan and Syria.
South Asia remains the most terrorist-impacted region
"In 2024, South Asia was the region with the highest average GTI score, a position it has held throughout the last decade," states the 2025 report.
"Despite the deterioration this year, which was driven primarily by Pakistan, terrorism has significantly declined compared to a decade ago, with all South Asian countries recording an improvement. This improvement is largely attributed to a decline in terrorist activity in Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka."
The report also highlighted that the region is home to two of the 10 countries with the worst GTI scores, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Pakistan, the most impacted country in the region, scored 8.374 and held the second position globally on the 2025 index. Following closely, Afghanistan scored 7.262, ranking ninth globally, while India scored 6.411, placing 14th globally.
Of the seven countries assessed in the region, only Bhutan and Sri Lanka have a GTI score of zero, meaning that it has not recorded a terrorist attack in the past five years.
Nepal is the third least impacted country by terrorism in the region, scoring 1.113 and ranking 68th globally, followed by Bangladesh.
