Tax return deadline extended till 31 December
Taxpayers unable to file online due to e-return registration issues may apply to the relevant excise commissioner with proper justification by 15 December
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a special order today (23 November), extending the deadline for individual taxpayers to file income tax returns for the 2025–26 tax year by one month, now set for 31 December.
A separate order states that taxpayers who are unable to file their returns online due to issues related to e-return system registration may apply to the relevant excise commissioner with proper justification by 15 December.
This year, online filing of income tax returns has been made mandatory for all individual taxpayers, except senior citizens aged 65 or above, persons with disabilities or special needs, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, legal representatives filing on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
Although these categories are exempt from mandatory online filing for the 2025–26 tax year, they can still file e-returns voluntarily.
Authorised representatives of taxpayers are also permitted to file e-returns online.
Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, despite being exempt, may register for the e-return system by emailing their passport number, national ID number, and email address to ereturn@etaxnbr.gov.bd. An OTP and registration link will then be emailed to them, enabling them to file returns online with ease.
Taxpayers can file their e-returns without uploading any documents by simply entering accurate information on income, expenses, assets, and liabilities. They can also pay income tax online from home using debit/credit cards, internet banking, or mobile financial services (such as bKash or Nagad). Once submitted, the system automatically generates the acknowledgement slip and income tax certificate. As a result, e-return filing has become increasingly popular among taxpayers both in Bangladesh and abroad.
To simplify the e-return process, NBR has provided training this year as it did last year, offering guidance not only to taxpayers but also to income tax lawyers, chartered accountants, cost and management accountants, and chartered secretaries.
Additionally, NBR has set up a call center to assist taxpayers with any e-return related issues. Taxpayers can receive immediate support by calling 09643 71 71 71.
