The British Empire, which began in the middle of the 16th century, inspired the phrase "The Sun Never Sets on the British Empire" by gaining control over 26.35% of the Earth's total land area during its nearly 400-year history. Nearly 60 of the world's 195 UN-recognised countries emerged from territories once ruled by the empire.
