What unfolded in Daffodil University-City University clashes
As videos of the attack circulated on social media, Daffodil students gathered in large numbers and advanced towards City University, triggering violent confrontations between the two groups
The clashes between Daffodil International University and City University students in Savar's Birulia Khagan area on the night of 26 October that left hundreds injured and several buses burned began with a single act, a student allegedly spitting near another.
What followed was hours of violence from late 26 October night to the early hours of 27 October, marked by arson, vandalism, and retaliation that turned two university campuses into battlegrounds.
Clash erupts after spitting incident
Witnesses said the incident began after a City University student allegedly spat near a Daffodil student passing by on a motorcycle outside a hostel occupied by Daffodil students.
The situation escalated when around 50 City University students reportedly attacked the rented accommodation of Daffodil students with brickbats and local weapons around 9pm, vandalising the premises.
Violence spreads as videos circulate
As videos of the attack circulated on social media, Daffodil students gathered in large numbers and advanced towards City University, triggering violent confrontations between the two groups. Brickbats were thrown and both sides engaged in counter-chasing until early morning.
Around midnight, Daffodil students reportedly entered the City University campus, vandalising property and setting vehicles on fire. Three university buses and one car were torched, while another bus, two cars, a motorcycle, and part of the administrative office were vandalised.
Students injured, others held captive
At around 9:30am, On 27 October, Daffodil Proctor Sheikh Muhammad Ali said nine students were being held captive at City University and about 150 Daffodil students were injured.
City University Proctor Professor Abu Zaid said around 50 of their students were injured.
Both universities file cases
Following the violence, the authorities of both universities filed separate cases with Savar Model Police Station on 28 October.
City University Registrar Professor Mir Akhter Hossain accused 1,000 unidentified Daffodil students of attacking its campus. The charges include arson, vandalism, looting, and the use of petrol and hand bombs, claiming Tk15 lakh in stolen cash and around Tk20 crore in total damage.
Daffodil's case accused 250 unidentified individuals of attacking a rented residence known as Bachelor Paradise, injuring several students and holding 11 hostage overnight. Police said investigations are underway and legal action will follow.
