Those not filing for taxes to get notice, must pay dues: NBR chief

National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan has warned that individual and corporate taxpayers, who failed to file their income tax returns on time, will receive notices from their respective tax offices and must pay their dues accordingly.
"Taxpayers who didn't file tax returns are receiving notice. Every non-filer will receive a notice, not only that, their files will be assessed by tax officials, and they will have to pay the proper taxes," he said at a seminar titled "Fiscal Issues for National Budget 2025-26 to Foster Economic and Business Growth," held today (4 May) at a hotel in Banani, Dhaka.
He also said, "We will issue instructions to the commissionerate offices to report how much tax they have collected from non-filers. We will also assess the taxes collected from individuals or companies that have enjoyed rebate rates."
"Currently, 90% of taxes are collected through tax deduction at source [TDS] or in advance, so we want to know exactly what our tax officials are doing," he added.
According to the NBR, there are over 1.15 crore tax identification number (TIN) holders in the country, but about two-thirds have not filed their tax returns.
On the other hand, only about 8% of registered companies filed their tax returns in FY2023-24.
Data from the Registrar of Joint Stock Companies and Firms (RJSC) shows that as of December 2023, there were 2.88 lakh registered public and private limited companies.
Out of them, only 24,381 companies or institutions submitted returns, which is 8.45% of the total, according to NBR data.
