Hundreds of workers from Shirina Garment and Textile Ltd formed a human chain on Saturday, in front of Chattogram Press Club demanding their dues.

The protesters have issued an ultimatum of 48-hour to clear all arrears of the workers.

The factory had around 700 workers when the owner decided to shut it down in April 2019.

The apparel company is a sister concern of Sunman Group owned by Major (Retd) Abdul Mannan.

Anwar Hossain, president of Bangladesh Labour Federation Chattogram, Helal Miah, leader of the protesting workers, Mohim, Rahim, Shah Alam, Obaidul Rahman, Marjina Begum, are few to name who spoke during the program. 

According to the speakers, sudden job loss has caused them to starve when their due salaries and other benefits are yet to be cleared.

“A number of at least 600 workers served the company for 10 to 15 years, yet many did not receive their salaries of four-five months,” they added.

Managing Director of Shirina Garment and Textile Ltd Belayet Hossain said, there is no salary due from our part although a group of workers are trying to cause chaos.

“As the company is facing hard time financially we have promised to pay the final settlement amount. as per law, on October 15,” he added.
