ADC assaulted over 'car scrape' in Hatirjheel, 5 arrested
According to police sources, all the accused are businessmen.
An additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of police was assaulted following a dispute over a "car scrape" in Dhaka's Hatirjheel area.
Police have arrested five people in connection with the incident, confirmed Syed Mohammad Farhad, deputy commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police's (DMP) Diplomatic Security Division.
The injured officer, Mahfuz Zaman Sarkar, an ADC posted with the DMP's Diplomatic Security Division, sustained injuries requiring 17 stitches. He is currently receiving treatment at United Hospital in the capital.
The incident occurred around 11:30pm on Wednesday (4 February) as the officer was returning home after duty. He was attacked on a bridge under the Hatirjheel project behind Police Plaza.
DC Syed Mohammad told The Business Standard that Mahfuz was heading to his residence in Aftabnagar in a car, accompanied by a friend.
While crossing a bridge in the Hatirjheel project area, his car came into contact with another vehicle travelling alongside.
Following the incident, the occupants of the other vehicle blocked his car, leading to an altercation.
Subsequently, around 10-12 people arrived at the scene and launched a sudden attack on him, the police official added.
Regarding the attackers' identities, the DC said no political affiliation has been found. However, it was reported that they were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
The arrested individuals are Morshed Alam, Md Billal Hossain, Mohammad Alamgir Hossain, Swapan Sarkar, and Sifat Yunus Lenin.
According to police sources, all the accused are businessmen.
Confirming the arrests, DMP Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman said police are continuing to investigate the incident and that a case has been filed.
