Waste to asset project shows promise for sustainable road building

A dissemination workshop on the "Waste to Asset Project" was held today at the seminar room of Well Park Residence Hotel in Chattogram.
The event was jointly organised by the Department of Civil Engineering of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) and Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited.
Mohammad Masudul Hasan, Head of 3rd Factory (ad interim) at Berger Paints, delivered the inaugural speech. Professor Dr Sudip Kumar Pal, Team Leader of the project and Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Environmental Engineering at CUET presented the key findings and innovative aspects of the research.
The study investigated the potential of using effluent sludge from paint factories, when blended with cement, to produce road construction materials, such as paver blocks. According to the findings, the method offers both environmental and economic advantages.
Vice-Chancellor of CUET, Professor Dr Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan, attended the workshop as the chief guest. In his speech, he said, "The innovative method presented in this research, which utilises sludge generated in paint factories as a partial replacement for cement in manufacturing paver blocks, can revolutionise not only sustainable environmental approaches but also the economic sector."
Other notable speakers included Sonia Sultana, Director of the Department of Environment, Chattogram Metropolitan Office; Engr Manjare Khorshed Alam, Chairman of the Chattogram Centre of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh; Anupam Pal, Chief Production Officer, Berger Paints; Muhammad Kawsar Hasan, Chief Works, Chattogram Factory, Berger Paints; and A.S.M. Obaidullah Mahmud, Chief R&D Officer, Berger Paints.
Participants included executive engineers from the Roads and Highways Department, the Local Government Engineering Department, the Chattogram Development Authority, the Chattogram City Corporation, and representatives from construction materials firms.
The workshop concluded with remarks from Professor Dr Asiful Hoque, Deputy Team Leader of the project. Event coordination was managed by Ashim Biswas, Head of Outsourced Production, and Mohammad Shahidullah, Head of Production - Resin, at Berger Paints Chattogram Factory. Jushan Abdullah, a research assistant on the project, moderated the session.
