BMU pays homage to martyrs on independence day
Bangladesh Medical University (BMU) marked Independence and National Day 2026 with a series of commemorative programmes, including a flag-hoisting ceremony, a voluntary blood donation drive, tributes at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar, special prayers, and enhanced meals for patients at the university hospital.
The day began on campus with the inauguration of a voluntary blood donation drive by the Department of Transfusion Medicine.
Acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad inaugurated the programme. Also present were Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader, Treasurer Prof Dr Nahrin Akhtar, Dean of Surgery Prof Dr Md Ibrahim Siddique, Dean of Nursing Prof Dr Md Monir Hossain Khan, Registrar Prof Dr Md Nazrul Islam, and Department Chair Prof Dr Ayesha Khatun.
Later, Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad led teachers, students, doctors, officers, and staff in laying wreaths at the National Martyrs' Memorial in Savar to honour the martyrs.
Addressing the gathering, Prof Dr Md Abul Kalam Azad paid tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and those killed in the July-August uprising, emphasising that Bangladesh's progress stems from independence and unity.
Prof Dr Md Mujibur Rahman Howlader underscored the importance of competent leadership for national progress, while Treasurer Prof Dr Nahrin Akhtar highlighted women's contributions since the Liberation War.
Registrar Prof Dr Md Nazrul Islam noted Bangladesh's return to democracy and expressed optimism for continued progress in education and healthcare.
Later, BMU officials laid wreaths at the graves of Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia at the Shaheed Zia shrine in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, offering prayers for their souls.
Senior officials also participated in a free blood group determination and voluntary donation programme organised by the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB).
