Bangladesh, UNHCR stress continued focus on rohingya response
UNHCR Country Representative Ivo Freijsen paid a courtesy call on State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam, MP, at her office today.
State Minister Shama Obaed Islam expressed appreciation for UNHCR's continued support for forcibly displaced Rohingyas, particularly its leadership under the Rohingya Response Plan.
She reiterated that repatriation to Myanmar remains the only viable solution to the crisis. Bangladesh, she added, will continue to collaborate with UNHCR and other partners to identify practical pathways, while sustaining humanitarian assistance in both Bhasan Char and Cox's Bazar.
In light of current funding constraints, the state minister urged UNHCR to intensify efforts to address critical humanitarian needs—including food, medicine, water and sanitation, and education—under the Joint Response Plan (JRP).
Both sides agreed to work jointly to keep the attention of the international community focused on the Rohingya issue.
Freijsen commended Bangladesh's generosity in hosting Rohingyas and reaffirmed UNHCR's commitment to supporting the country in addressing the humanitarian crisis.
