Walton installs country’s largest floating solar power plant in Gazipur
Aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the country's superbrand and tech giant Walton has prioritised green and renewable energy initiatives to promote sustainable industrial growth.
As part of this effort, Walton has installed the country's largest floating solar power plant — with a capacity of one megawatt — at its headquarters in Chandra, Gazipur, marking a significant step towards a greener future in the industrial sector.
Mostafizur Rahman Razu, head of Walton's Environment, Health and Safety Department, said the floating solar power plant has set an example in ensuring sustainable industrial development. "Through the project, Walton is not only generating electricity but also contributing to fish farming, land conservation, reduced water evaporation and environmental protection," he added.
He noted that after meeting the electricity needs of the Walton factory, the surplus power generated from the floating solar plant is supplied to the national grid through a net metering system. "This solar plant will generate electricity for the next 20 years efficiently and sustainably, without harming the environment or the ecosystem of the fish farm," Razu said.
Since its inception, Walton has embedded green practices in its manufacturing processes to ensure zero harm to people, the environment and property, while moving towards achieving net zero carbon emissions.
To protect the environment, Walton has adopted a range of measures, including the use of environment-friendly gases, waste minimisation and recycling, composting, energy-efficient technologies, greenhouse gas reduction, renewable energy installation and water recycling.
Through these initiatives, Walton has reduced 911,823 metric tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions and cut its overall carbon footprint by 10 percent, setting a benchmark for sustainable industry and social responsibility in Bangladesh.
