Per capita income in Dhaka at $5,163, nearly double of $2,820 national average: DCCI survey
DCCI's EPI survey revealed that 46% of the country's total GDP is concentrated in Dhaka, and the city accounts for 40% of all national employment.
The average per capita income for residents of Dhaka stands at $5,163, almost double the national average of $2,820, according to the Economic Position Index (EPI) survey released by the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI).
The survey, which provides a quarterly assessment of the country's economic activities, highlighted the concentration of wealth and economic activity in the capital. The report was presented at a DCCI event today (25 October).
DCCI's EPI survey revealed that 46% of the country's total GDP is concentrated in Dhaka, and the city accounts for 40% of all national employment. Dhaka houses 32% of the urban population and 11.2% of the country's total population — a density noted as one of the highest in Asia.
Furthermore, the capital is responsible for 40% of the country's total exports.
The survey further detailed the concentration of corporate power, noting that 55.8% of the manufacturing sector is controlled by just 365 companies, while 58.6% of the garment sector is controlled by 214 organisations.
During the event, speakers pointed out that nearly 80% of the national economy relies on the informal sector.
They urged the Dhaka Chamber to include the agricultural sector in future editions of the EPI survey. Stressing the challenges posed by a rapidly changing economy, speakers concluded that timely and data-rich policy formulation is now crucial for sustainable development across the country.
