UCB brings digital learning to rural Barishal school
In the serene, river-embraced village of Madhabpasha in Babuganj upazila of Barishal stands a nearly century-old educational institution — Madhabpasha Chandradwip High School and College.
Every day, around 400 students come here to chase their dreams and shape their future. But dreams often meet hard realities.
Unlike schools in cities, this rural institution lacks modern facilities—no advanced laboratories, no adequate technological tools. As a result, pupils' learning opportunities remain limited. While computer education has become routine in urban schools, many of Madhabpasha's pupils have never even touched a keyboard.
This reality inspired United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) to step in. The bank, recognised not only as a financial institution but also as a socially responsible organisation, has long been committed to making a positive impact across various sectors. From providing free heart treatment for underprivileged children, to awarding scholarships to high-achieving students and supporting educational and environmental causes—UCB has earned its place as a responsible social partner.
Continuing this legacy, UCB recently extended its support to Madhabpasha Chandradwip High School and College under its corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme by donating ten new computers. The initiative marks a new horizon for the pupils of the institution.
In a brief yet joyous ceremony, representatives from UCB's head office formally handed over the computers to Acting Principal Jiban Krishna Bepari. The event was attended by young politician Barrister Asadur Rahman Fuad, Governing Committee Chairman Dr Pradip Kumar Sarker, the college principal, teachers, pupils, local public representatives, and community members. The atmosphere was filled with pride, joy, and gratitude.
"Our pupils have so far read the word 'computer' only in textbooks. Now they will finally be able to use one. This is not just a machine but a new beginning for education in our village," said the acting principal.
Parents expressed relief that their children could now learn technological skills in their own community, rather than having to move to the city.
UCB representatives said, "We believe knowledge and technology are the strongest tools for social transformation. This initiative ensures that the pupils of Madhabpasha are not left behind."
The ten computers may seem modest in number, but their impact could be profound. The school's pupils will now have the opportunity to learn computer operation, use the internet, pursue online education, and develop digital skills. When such lights of technology spread across small villages, the entire nation advances on the power of knowledge and digital competence.
