CU teacher harassed, dragged to proctor's office by Cucsu leaders
The teacher, Hasan Muhammad Roman, was allegedly filing cases and harassing protesting students during the Awami League regime
A group of leaders of the Chittagong University Central Students Union (Cucsu) harassed a teacher of the university today (10 January) and handed him over to the proctor's office over allegations of his involvement in killings during the 2024 July Uprising.
The teacher, Hasan Muhammad Roman, an assistant professor of the Department of Law, was reportedly absconding and was detained by Cucsu leaders when he came to the campus today as an invigilator for CU admission test of B unit.
Confirming the matter, CU Proctor Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy said Hasan is currently at the proctor's office, and the university administration will decide on his matter.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media, showing several students dragging teacher Hasan away. At one point, one of them is seen restraining him from behind.
The video shows Cucsu Office Secretary Abdullah Al Noman, Library and Cafeteria Secretary Masum Billah, Law and Human Rights Secretary Fazle Rabbi, and executive member Sohanur Rahman. During the incident, Hasan Muhammad was heard screaming. He was later taken away in an auto-rickshaw.
According to leaders of Cucsu, currently dominated by Jamaat-e-Islami's student wing Islami Chhatrashibir, Hasan was allegedly involved in filing cases and harassing protesting students while serving as an assistant proctor during the Awami League regime.
"He faces allegations of direct involvement in the July movement massacre. During the Awami League regime, while serving as an assistant proctor, he branded students engaged in democratic protests as 'militants' and filed cases against them," Fazle Rabbi, Cucsu Law and Human Rights Affairs secretary, told The Business Standard.
"He directly assisted the Chhatra League and provided guidance in various acts of violence. He allegedly went into hiding for a long time over accusations of involvement in the massacre during the July Uprising," Rabbi added.
Hasan Muhammad, however, denied all allegations against him. "I am not involved in the allegations being made," he said.
"While on duty at the examination hall today, I came out after hearing shouts outside… I became frightened and tried taking shelter at a colleague's residence at gate-2, from where several people detained me," he added.
Meanwhile, Proctor Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy said Hasan Muhammad was a "soldier of the fascist regime".
"He was known as 'problem boy' on campus because of his involvement in a wide variety of issues," he added.
