Professor Dr M Shamsher Ali joins BOU as Professor Emeritus

Eminent nuclear scientist and educationist Professor Dr M Shamsher Ali, founding vice-chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), has officially joined BOU as a professor emeritus. His appointment was unanimously approved during the 195th meeting of the BOU Board of Governors on 18 February.
As a professor emeritus, Dr Shamsher Ali will provide guidance on open and distance learning and contribute to the university's academic development, research, and innovation.
Welcoming Dr Shamsher Ali to his new role, BOU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr A B M Obaidul Islam said, "It is an honour and a moment of great pride to appoint such a distinguished, internationally acclaimed scholar as professor emeritus in recognition of his groundbreaking contribution to the establishment of Bangladesh Open University." He expressed confidence that, as the visionary behind BOU, Dr Shamsher Ali will offer invaluable insights to enhance the university's academic activities.
On Tuesday, Vice-Chancellor Dr Obaidul Islam formally handed over the appointment letter to Dr Shamsher Ali in the presence of his wife, Ms Sakeba Ali, founding principal of Marie Curie School. Upon receiving the letter, Dr Shamsher Ali said, "I sincerely thank and appreciate BOU for bestowing this rare honour upon me."
The event was attended by BOU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Dr Dil Rowshan Jinnat Ara Nazneen, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr Saeed Ferdous, Treasurer Professor Dr Abul Hasnat Md Shamim, and Registrar Dr Md Shafiqul Alam, among others.
With a distinguished career and numerous accolades, Dr Shamsher Ali has received several prestigious awards, including the Hariprasanna Roy Gold Medal from the University of Dhaka, the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal, and the Jagadish Chandra Bose Gold Medal. His scientific research has been published in leading international journals, and he has authored several notable books on science, mathematics, and Islam.
Beyond science, Dr Ali is widely known for his deep interest in poetry, music, literature, and religion. His close friends and peers describe him as "a man with a large antenna," someone who perceives both humanity and nature beyond conventional perspectives.
