Magna Charta Observatory selects Dr Lamagna for governing council
AIUB has announced that Professor Dr Carmen Z Lamagna, Member of the Board of Trustees and former Vice-Chancellor of American International University–Bangladesh, has been appointed as a member of the Governing Council of the Magna Charta Observatory (MCO) for a four-year term beginning 13 November 2025.
The appointment recognises her longstanding contribution to higher education and reflects AIUB's continued engagement with global academic values and initiatives.
Established in 1988 in Bologna, Italy, the Magna Charta Observatory serves as the global guardian of core university principles, including academic freedom, institutional autonomy, integrity, responsibility, and service to society. More than 950 universities from over 90 countries have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum, pledging their commitment to these values.
AIUB is a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 and actively participates in the 'Responsive and Responsible University' project under the MCO framework. Dr Lamagna serves as project lead for AIUB, guiding its efforts to strengthen institutional integrity, accountability, and sustainability.
Professor Dr Lamagna is widely regarded as one of Asia's most influential higher education leaders. During her three-decade tenure as Vice-Chancellor, she oversaw AIUB's growth from 70 students to a community of more than 15,000 learners across five faculties, establishing the university as a respected institution known for academic rigour, innovation, and quality.
Her global contributions include serving as Treasurer and Executive Committee Member of the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), Administrative Board Member of the International Association of Universities (IAU), and as the first female President of the Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP). Her work has earned her numerous international awards and recognitions.
Dr Lamagna's appointment to the MCO Governing Council reflects her distinguished legacy of leadership and service, further elevating AIUB's profile as a responsible and forward-looking institution within the global higher education community.
