AmCham holds discussion on strengthening Bangladesh’s energy security
The American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham) hosted a focus group discussion titled "Powering Bangladesh Toward Energy Security" on 9 December 2025 at the Sheraton Dhaka Hotel.
The event was supported by Chevron Bangladesh, whose three-decade partnership has contributed significantly to the country's economic growth and community development. Chevron, Bangladesh's largest gas producer, has invested around USD 4.2 billion and currently supplies nearly 60% of domestic demand.
In his opening remarks, Syed Ershad Ahmed, President of AmCham Bangladesh, said energy security has become critically important for the country. He noted that persistent fuel shortages, ageing transmission systems, declining gas reserves and overreliance on imported fuels continue to undermine reliability and industrial growth. Strengthening regulatory governance, accelerating exploration, upgrading infrastructure, expanding renewables and ensuring clearer investment pathways are essential to building a resilient, secure and future-ready energy ecosystem, he added.
The session was moderated by Paul Frost, Commercial Counselor at the US Embassy in Dhaka, reflecting continued commitment to strengthening US–Bangladesh trade and investment cooperation.
The discussion was attended by Eric M. Walker, Vice President of AmCham and President of Chevron Bangladesh; Professor M. Tamim, petroleum and mineral resources engineering scholar and Vice Chancellor of IUB; Muhammad Imrul Kabir, Director of Corporate Affairs at Chevron Bangladesh; AmCham members from the power and energy sector; and senior representatives from leading companies in the industry.
