IUB students develop smart earthquake response system

Team Bhumikompo from Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has emerged as champion in the Poster Presentation segment of Disaster Management Exercise 4.0, held in October 2025 and organised by the BUP Disaster Management Forum (BUPDMF).
The national competition brought together students from universities across Bangladesh to showcase innovative approaches to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery.
The winning IUB team comprised Farhan Sadeque from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and Rukhsar Anwar and Limia Nawer from the Department of Environmental Science and Management. Their project, titled "IoT-Based Centralised Earthquake Response and Recovery Platform for Bangladesh", was presented under the theme "Innovative Earthquake Resilience: Smart Response and Recovery Mechanisms."
The proposed platform features a five-layer integration model combining IoT-based seismic data collection, AI-driven damage assessment, and blockchain-enabled transparency in resource coordination. Using sensors, smartphone-based reporting, and localised AI data centres, the system processes real-time information and displays it on a central dashboard for emergency response teams and government agencies. This enables faster decision-making, automated alerts, and improved coordination among responders, volunteers, and authorities during earthquake emergencies.
Farhan led the technical architecture and dashboard design, while Rukhsar and Limia contributed environmental and sustainability perspectives, ensuring the system's adaptability to Bangladesh's disaster management framework. Their work highlights IUB's interdisciplinary approach that bridges engineering and environmental sciences.
Disaster Management Exercise 4.0 provided a platform for students nationwide to present research-driven solutions to real-world disaster challenges. Team Bhumikompo's achievement underscores how IUB students are contributing to national resilience and sustainable disaster management through innovation and applied research.
