The Network for International Law Students (NILS) Chittagong University Chapter and Legal Empowerment of Bangladesh (LEB) are jointly organising the 'NILS-LEB National Model Legislative Assembly (NMLA) 2025' on May 23–24 at the University of Chittagong.

The event will simulate parliamentary debates and foster youth engagement in legislative reform.

The initiative marks Bangladesh's first model legislative assembly, bringing together students from around 40 public and private universities, including Dhaka University, Chittagong University, Rajshahi University, Jahangirnagar University, and Jagannath University.

Justice AKM Asaduzzaman, Appellate Division, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, will attend as chief guest. Professor Dr M Yeahia Akhter, Vice Chancellor of the University of Chittagong, will inaugurate the event.

Other notable guests include Advocate Rezaul Karim, Professor Dr Borhan Uddin Khan, Professor Dr M Shamim Uddin Khan, Md Saiful Islam Shantu BPM, Professor Dr Md Kamal Uddin and Professor Dr Tanvir M Hyder Arif.

The model assembly will feature three parliamentary houses, with participants assuming the roles of Members of Parliament. Each house will deliberate on a specific piece of legislation or social issue.

The first house will discuss amendments to the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, 2004, focusing on enhancing transparency and public accountability.

The second house will review the Money Laundering Prevention Act of 2012 and propose stronger measures to counter financial crimes.

The third house will address the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000, recommending legal reforms to strengthen justice and protection for vulnerable groups.

In addition to these legal reforms, a social justice session will explore inclusive policy strategies for marginalised communities, especially women and children, and examine the relationship between law and social welfare.

Channel 24 and Ekattor TV are the television media partners, Bangladesh Pratidin is the national print media partner, and The Business Standard covers the event online. At the same time, The Daily Azadi serves as the local print partner. The Chattogram University Journalists Association has joined as the mass media partner.

The Vice Chancellor of Chittagong University, Professor Dr M Yeahia Akhter, has warmly welcomed this significant initiative. The Vice-Chancellor commented on the event, "Students often lack practical knowledge on how laws are crafted in Parliament. This initiative by NILS-LEB will provide students with invaluable real-world insights into law-making and parliamentary procedures, and for that, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to NILS-LEB."
