DSCC administrator declares ‘zero tolerance’ in mosquito control drive
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Md Abdus Salam on Saturday announced a policy of 'zero tolerance' in mosquito control, warning there would be no laxity in the drive.
He made the remarks at an emergency meeting with officials from the Mosquito Control Branch of the Health Department at the Nagar Bhaban auditorium.
The meeting was called following a recent rise in mosquito prevalence in DSCC areas. Officials discussed ensuring the effectiveness of insecticides, maintaining proper application procedures, and strengthening field-level supervision. The Health Department was instructed to coordinate with the Waste Management Department to intensify mosquito control.
The meeting also decided to increase public awareness and, if necessary, conduct mobile court drives should Aedes mosquito larvae be found.
'Neglect, failure, or corruption in mosquito control will not be tolerated in any way. Our position on this matter is zero tolerance,' the DSCC Administrator stated. He added that he would personally inspect mosquito control activities.
He stated that a 10-day special 'crash programme' would begin the following day in 10 DSCC areas in phases, with participation from city corporation officials and local residents.
The meeting also discussed training to enhance the skills of mosquito control workers and the trial use of new alternatives to existing insecticides. The Administrator directed that strict legal action be taken if breeding grounds are found at any government or private establishment and no action is taken despite repeated warnings.
DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md Zahirul Islam; Corporation Secretary Md Nasim Ahmed; Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahabubur Rahman Talukder; and department heads and regional officials were present, along with Health Department mosquito control officials.
