Dhaka after dusk: Fawaz Rob’s night series returns home
Zainul Gallery has announced a solo art exhibition by Bangladeshi artist Fawaz Rob, showcasing a major collection of his intaglio works, including the acclaimed Night Series, Charukola Series, and Palestine Series.
Spanning ten years of experimentation, the exhibition features one of the most ambitious bodies of contemporary printmaking in Bangladesh.
Fawaz Rob's work has been exhibited in Paris, Florence, Budapest, Kathmandu, Istanbul, San Francisco, Athens, and other cities. His work has appeared in Le Parisien, and he is the first Bangladeshi artist to be published in the Journal of the California Society of Printmakers. His piece "Long Walk Home" received an international award for art activism, while "Gaza 1924" from his Palestine Series is now part of the permanent collection of the Art for Palestine archive.
He studied design at San Francisco State University, completed a master's degree in Florence, and earned his MFA from Charukola. His work is also archived at the Printmaking Museum in Guanlan, China.
Known for his dramatic yet disciplined use of aquatint, Fawaz Rob creates cityscapes that explore the ways Dhaka transforms after dusk. His night scenes reject romanticism, instead delving into urban solitude, shifting moods, and the quiet intelligence of architectural forms. Every tonal shift—achieved through the demanding process of intaglio—reflects his commitment to slow observation in an age of instant imagery.
His experiences at Charukola, particularly the campus's ambience at night, shaped both his technique and his fascination with darkness as a visual language. As he notes, printmaking demands "endless hours in a dirty studio... and a little craziness", yet leads to "unimaginable beauty".
All of Fawaz Rob's artworks are rendered exclusively in black and white. This exhibition invites viewers into a Dhaka often overlooked: rain-soaked streets, silent courtyards, diffused lights, and shadows that form their own architectures.
The exhibition is free and open to all.
