‘The city of lie’ to screen at Bogura international film festival
A full-length feature film, The City of Lie (Mithye Kothar Shohore), directed and produced by filmmaker Anand Kutum, is set to be screened at the Bogura International Film Festival.
The film will be screened on 10 January at 5:00pm (Bangladesh time) at Madhuban Cineplex, the official venue of the festival.
Shot in the Indian city of Kolkata, The City of Lie is an Indo-Bangla joint production that presents a subtle dialogue between the cultures, emotions, and urban lives of both sides of Bengal. The film is a romantic psychological mystery, where love, the city, and mental illusion gradually merge into one another.
The story follows a young Bangladeshi photographer who travels to Kolkata as an observer and traveller. Through his camera lens, he begins to see the city and its people, and in the process, falls in love with a mysterious woman. The relationship is not merely emotional but investigative, as love slowly leads him towards an unsettling truth, where the boundary between reality and imagination becomes blurred. After he finally finds the woman, a series of strange events unfolds, drawing the audience deeper into psychological conflict and mystery.
One of the film's defining features is its narrative perspective. The entire story is told through the eyes of a traveller, with the city itself emerging as a character. Kolkata is not portrayed merely as a location, but as a living map of memory, desire, and illusion—a city that speaks, raises questions, and conceals truths.
The film stars Jibon Roy from Bangladesh, alongside Indian actors Dipanwita and Abhijit Roy.
Speaking about the film, director Anand Kutum said, "This is a story about people who are lost within a city. There is love here, but it is not simple. There is mystery, but it is not limited to the plot—it exists within the human mind. The City of Lie is essentially a story of a city standing between truth and falsehood."
He added, "My films have been screened at festivals before, but the thought of this film being shown on the advanced large screen of a cineplex at the Bogura International Film Festival truly excites me. This film is meant to come alive on a big screen, with precise sound and the collective breath of the audience."
Within the contemporary Indo-Bangla independent film movement, The City of Lie stands as a sensitive addition—one that does not merely tell a story, but invites the audience to feel it.
