Tarique Rahman becomes BNP chairman
Tarique Rahman was appointed acting chairman of the BNP in 2018, following the imprisonment of his mother, Khaleda Zia.
Tarique Rahman formally assumed office as the BNP's chairman today (9 January).
According to a statement posted on the BNP's official Facebook page, the position of chairman became vacant following the death of BNP Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
In line with the party constitution, a meeting of the BNP National Standing Committee was convened to address the vacancy.
At the meeting, the committee unanimously decided to formally appoint Tarique to the vacant post, reads the statement.
Through this decision, he has officially taken over as chairman of the BNP in accordance with the party's constitution, adds the statement.
Earlier in the day, Tarique called an emergency meeting of the BNP Standing Committee. The party's Standing Committee member Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain confirmed to BSS that the meeting was scheduled to be held at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan at 9:30pm, with Tarique Rahman presiding over it.
A senior BNP leader said the meeting was not part of any routine schedule and had no specific agenda, but noted its importance as Tarique Rahman was expected to be elected chairman through the process.
On 4 January, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had said during an exchange of views with journalists in Sylhet that Tarique Rahman would be elected as the party chairman within a day or two.
