BRAC EPL Investments wins global award for Bangladesh’s first social bond
BRAC EPL Investments Limited won Environmental Finance's "Sustainable Investment Initiative of the Year (Fixed Income)" award for structuring Bangladesh's first social bond aligned with International Capital Market Association standards.
The international award recognises institutions and transactions that demonstrate innovation, leadership and measurable impact in advancing responsible investment, according to a press release.
BRAC EPL Investments served as lead arranger for the bond, issued by BRAC Bank PLC. The transaction was recognised for its alignment with global standards and contribution to eight Sustainable Development Goals.
These include no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, decent work and economic growth, reduced inequalities, and sustainable cities and communities.
Proceeds from the Tk1,000 crore bond will be used to finance employment generation, cottage, micro, small and medium enterprises, socio-economic advancement and empowerment, food security, affordable housing, essential services and public health infrastructure.
BRAC EPL Investments conducted investor-awareness campaigns that attracted 665 subscribers to the bond, including individual investors.
The company said the initiative widened access to fixed-income instruments for retail investors while helping address demand-side constraints in Bangladesh's bond market.
The bond is expected to be listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange's Alternative Trading Board, providing liquidity to existing investors and enabling broader participation through the secondary market.
Syed Rashed Hussain, Chief Executive Officer of BRAC EPL Investments Limited, said the award validated the company's mission to contribute to the development of Bangladesh's capital market.
"It reflects our vision to provide innovative, pioneering and world-class sustainable investment banking solutions," he said.
"We believe this milestone will encourage greater participation from issuers, investors and other stakeholders in building a vibrant impact-investment ecosystem in Bangladesh and directing more capital towards initiatives that generate positive social and environmental impacts."
