Bangladesh mission in South Africa marks Independence day
The Bangladesh High Commission in Pretoria marked Independence and National Day 2026 with due dignity and a festive atmosphere, highlighting the nation's progress and international engagement.
A reception was held on 26 March 2026 at the Javett Art Centre, University of Pretoria, to commemorate the occasion.
The day's programme commenced with the hoisting of the national flag and the playing of Bangladesh's national anthem. At the reception, the national anthems of both Bangladesh and South Africa were played to open the event.
In his welcome address, High Commissioner Shah Ahmed Shafi emphasised the shared histories of Bangladesh and South Africa in their struggles for freedom, dignity, and democratic governance. He expressed Bangladesh's commitment to deepening bilateral relations, especially in trade and investment.
He highlighted Bangladesh's emergence as the world's second-largest exporter of ready-made garments and reiterated the nation's commitment to expanding mutually beneficial international cooperation. He also conveyed best wishes for the success of Bangladesh's newly formed government.
Chief guest Ganief Hendricks, MP, Deputy Minister of Social Development of South Africa, praised Bangladesh's development progress and economic achievements, describing them as highly commendable. He noted that South Africa regards Bangladesh as an important partner and is eager to expand bilateral cooperation.
He also expressed optimism about further strengthening ties between the two countries.
The event drew around 200 members of the diplomatic corps—including ambassadors, high commissioners, and their spouses—as well as approximately 100 members of the Bangladeshi expatriate community in South Africa.
The reception ran from 12pm to 3pm, concluding with a lunch for invited guests.
