A woman was critically injured in a brutal attack allegedly by her husband while she was asleep in Chattogram's Lakshmipur upazila yesterday (15 March).

The incident took place last night in a rented house on Kalu Haji Road in Ward 7 of Lakshmipur Municipality.

Speaking to The Business Standard today (16 March), the victim Rina Begum's brother Hossain Ahmed said, "My sister sustained severe injuries after her husband, Alamgir Hossain, severed the tendons in her legs, struck her head and body with vegetable cutter (locally known as Boti) and crushed her hands and feet using a stone slab."

According to locals, Rina and Alamgir lived in a rented house with their children. On the night of the incident, after having dinner, Rina went to sleep with her children. Alamgir returned home and attacked his sleeping wife before fleeing the scene.

Neighbours rushed Rina to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. Due to the severity of her injuries, doctors later referred her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced care.

The accused was a drug addict, locals said.

Rina's brother said, "We have brought Rina to DMCH. She has been taken to the operation theatre for surgery. Her condition is critical. I will file a case."

"Alamgir attacked my sister without any reason," he added.

TBS could not contact Alamgir Hossain for comments as he is on the run.

Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Manna, said, "We were not officially informed of the incident, but we learned about it this morning. We are investigating the matter and will take necessary action."
