Throat-slit, half-decomposed body of youth recovered in Cox’s Bazar; wife at large
Police said the motive behind the killing may become clear once the victim’s wife, who is currently absconding, is traced and questioned.
Police recovered the throat-slit, half-decomposed body of a 25-year-old man from his rented house in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar today (4 March), while his wife remains at large.
The deceased was identified as Belal Uddin Jihad, also known as Badal, 25. He worked as a battery-run auto-rickshaw driver and, along with his wife Tahera Begum Akhi, was locally known for creating content on TikTok.
Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ramu Police Station, said locals alerted police after a foul smell began emanating from the rented house where the couple lives.
"When officers arrived, they found the door locked from the outside. After breaking it open, they discovered Badal's throat-slit body lying on the bed," the OC told The Business Standard.
Based on the condition of the body, police initially suspect that Badal was strangled and had his throat slit at least three days ago, he added.
The body has been sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police said the motive behind the killing may become clear once the victim's wife, who is currently absconding, is traced and questioned.
Swapan Barua, member of Rajarkul Union Parishad (Ward No 9), said Badal's family had not accepted his marriage to Akhi as she had previously been married, prompting the couple to live separately from his family.
"A few days ago, a dispute occurred between the husband and wife. We held a local mediation and resolved the issue socially," he said.
He added, "It initially appears Akhi may have planned the killing following family conflicts and fled after locking the house from the outside."
Her whereabouts have remained unknown for the past three days, and her mobile phone has been switched off, he added.
