Tarique Rahman meets foreign dignitaries after taking oath as PM
Among those who called on the prime minister was Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
Newly sworn-in Prime Minister Tarique Rahman held courtesy meetings with visiting foreign dignitaries at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban shortly after the oath-taking ceremony.
Among those who called on the prime minister were Maldivian President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
Other foreign dignitaries included Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Pakistan's Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal Chaudhry, Nepalese Foreign Minister Bala Nanda Sharma and Sri Lanka's Minister of Health and Mass Media Nalinda Jayatissa.
United Kingdom's Indo-Pacific Under-Secretary Seema Malhotra, and Turkey's Deputy Foreign Minister Beris Ekinci also paid a courtesy visit to the prime minister.
During the meetings, the leaders congratulated the Bangladeshi prime minister for the huge electoral victory of his party and the democratic transition of Bangladesh. During the discussions, TArqiue and the visiting leaders reaffirmed their strong commitment to further strengthening and advancing bilateral relations based on mutual respect, shared interests, and the collective well-being of their peoples.
They discussed renewed bilateral engagement in trade and investment, connectivity, energy, education, healthcare, climate change, migration, people-to-people contacts, and regional collaboration.
Later, Tarique Rahman also met President Mohammed Shahabuddin.
Earlier in the day, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman took oath as the country's 11th prime minister after his party secured a sweeping victory in the 13th national election. A 50-member cabinet was sworn in during the ceremony.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath at the South Plaza of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
