Swapon resigns as minister, named political adviser to PM Tarique
He will receive ministerial rank and benefits in new role.
Zahir Uddin Swapon, who recently resigned as information and broadcasting minister, has been appointed political adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, according to a Cabinet Division gazette issued today (22 August).
The notification stated that the appointment was made under Rules 3B(i) and 3B(ii) of the Rules of Business, 1996, and took effect immediately.
Swapon would be entitled to the rank, salary, allowances and other benefits of a minister while serving as the prime minister's adviser, it added.
Earlier, Swapon resigned as information and broadcasting minister, and President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir accepted his resignation.
Swapon took charge of the ministry on 17 February, after the BNP formed the government following its victory in the 13th parliamentary election held on 12 February.
Yesterday, four new ministers and two state ministers were sworn in, marking the first cabinet reshuffle since the BNP took office in February this year.
The government later allocated portfolios to the newly appointed ministers and state ministers.
Andaleeve Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party and lawmaker for Bhola-1, was among the four new ministers sworn in yesterday. He was subsequently given charge of the information and broadcasting ministry.
