Satkhira youths plant paddy on road to protest poor condition
Locals say the muddy road makes it extremely difficult to take sick people to hospital.
Local youths today (16 August) planted paddy saplings on a road in Shyamnagar upazila of Satkhira to protest its deplorable condition and the prolonged suffering of commuters.
The symbolic protest took place around noon in the South Kaikhali area of Kaikhali union, where a roughly one-kilometre stretch of the road has become nearly unusable.
Local youth Asaduzzaman said thousands of villagers have to wade through knee-deep mud to travel along the road every day, causing serious problems for students and other residents.
"Even taking a sick person to a hospital becomes extremely difficult," he said.
Kaikhali Union Parishad Chairman Abdur Rahim acknowledged the commuters' difficulties and said the road falls under the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED).
"The road has been included in a Satkhira development project. I am continuing efforts to have it repaired to ease the people's suffering," he said.
Abdur Rahman Muhim, senior assistant engineer of Satkhira LGED, said, "If the road has been included in an ongoing project, steps will be taken to repair it quickly."
