Protest in Shyamnagar demanding Satkhira-4 MP Nazrul’s resignation intensifies

Protests have intensified in Satkhira's Shyamnagar Upazila for the second consecutive day, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of Jamaat-e-Islami MP Gazi Nazrul Islam from the Satkhira-4 constituency over his alleged extramarital affair controversy.
People took to the streets at 12pm today (23 July) under the banner of the Conscious Citizens' Society, staging demonstrations across several areas of the upazila.
The protesters held rallies and demonstrations on the main roads of different unions, including Ishwaripur, Nurnagar, and Banshpur.

Protesters said that Nazrul should not only be expelled from the party but also removed from his parliamentary seat over what they described as involvement in unethical activities. The locals no longer want to see him as their MP, they said.
The controversy surrounding Nazrul Islam began on 20 July when CCTV camera footage showing him in an intimate moment with a woman went viral on social media, triggering widespread controversy.
Responding to the incident, Nazrul posted on Facebook claiming one of the girls was his second wife. They got married on 17 June this year with the consent of his first wife. However, this assertion has drawn further widespread criticism.
The lawmaker further alleged that while he and his family were staying in Dhaka's Moghbazar area, his driver and a relative of his second wife brought outsiders to hold them hostage and demand money.
According to him, after failing to extort money and because of previous enmity, the group illegally obtained the CCTV footage and circulated it online.
Videos featuring statements from the MP's first wife, his claimed second wife and his father-in-law were later shared on social media, in which they described the matter as a family issue and alleged that it was part of a conspiracy.
However, Jamaat yesterday (22 July) expelled Nazrul from the party after an organisational investigation found evidence supporting allegations of moral turpitude against him.
According to a statement, he has been expelled under Article 62 of the party's constitution after the investigation established his moral turpitude. The party also decided to immediately inform the Election Commission of his expulsion from the organisation.
