Protesters demand arrest of BNP chief's Adviser Fazlur Rahman over July Uprising remarks
Fazlur Rahman came under party scrutiny after making repeated controversial remarks about the July uprising
A group of 12 to 14 people staged a protest today (25 August) in front of BNP Chairperson's Adviser Fazlur Rahman's residence near the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), demanding his arrest.
Ramna Division Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam told The Business Standard that the protesters introduced themselves as leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP). He said police were deployed to the area to prevent any untoward incident.
Toma Faria, a central committee member of the Bangladesh Ganatantrik Chharta Sangsad (Bangladesh Democratic Students' Council), told TBS that they gathered there to demand Fazlur Rahman's arrest because he had called the July uprising protesters as children of 'Razakar', a dark force and actors.
Fazlur Rahman came under party scrutiny after making repeated controversial remarks about the July uprising.
The protester's sit-in caused slow traffic movement in front of the ACC building.
Yesterday (24 August), BNP served him a show-cause notice over the comments.
ASK expresses concern
Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) has expressed serious concern over what it described as the deliberate creation of a mob in front of BNP Chairperson's Adviser Fazlur Rahman's residence, which has caused an environment of fear.
"Such mob intimidation not only terrorises an individual but also threatens society at large. These unlawful actions interfere with citizens' constitutional rights to freedom of expression, thought, conscience, personal security, and dignity," ASK said in a statement.
It stated that the Constitution of Bangladesh guarantees the right to life and personal security (Articles 31 and 32) and freedom of thought, conscience, and expression (Article 39).
"The formation of a mob outside Fazlur Rahman's residence constitutes a serious violation of these fundamental rights. This act is not only an insult to a veteran freedom fighter but also a deliberate attempt to instill fear across society and suppress dissent," reads the statement.
