Writ filed challenging eligibility of SM Farhad as Chhatra Shibir's GS candidate in Ducsu election

A writ petition has been filed challenging the eligibility of SM Farhad as the general secretary (GS) candidate from the panel of Islami Chhatra Shibir in the upcoming Dhaka University Central Students' Union (Ducsu) election.
The High Court bench of Justice S K Tahsin Ali and Justice Habibul Gani heard the petition today and set Tuesday (2 September) as the next hearing date. Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua represented the petitioner during the hearing.
The petition was filed by BM Fahmida Alam, the nominated candidate for the position of secretary for Liberation War and Democratic Movements from the Leftist Student Alliance panel.
It stated that Farhad was previously a member of the Chhatra League committee. It questioned how he could now become a candidate from the Islami Chhatra Shibir panel, thereby challenging his candidacy.
SM Farhad, who was the secretary of Islami Chhatra Shibir's Dhaka University, came to the limelight last year as it was revealed that he held a position in Chhatra League as well.
The revelation dominated discussions on social media, with many netizens posting memes and statuses on "secret Shibirs".
SM Farhad, is a student of 2017-2018 session at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research and a resident of Kabi Jasimuddin Hall, reports bangla daily the Prothom Alo.
His political affiliations took social media by storm on 22 September 2024 following which Prothom Alo investigated and confirmed from a leader of Shibir's DU unit that Farhad did indeed hold the positions of the secretary of the student political party.
He has also held the post of the joint general secretary of Dhaka University Social Welfare and Research Institute Branch of Chhatra League since 2022.
Even photos of Farhad sitting with other BCL leaders of the campus have become viral overnight.
