RU Shibir cancelled Rucsu GS Ammar's 'Sathi' membership last year, expelled over allegations of post trading
A letter issued on 31 July from the Shibir’s RU unit also instructed activists at all levels to cut ties with Ammar.
Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (Rucsu) General Secretary Salahuddin Ammar was a "Sathi" of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir and had his status cancelled last year after failing to adequately respond to allegations including financial irregularities and the trading of positions in the metropolitan Chhatra Shakti unit.
According to a letter issued by RU Shibir unit on 31 July, Shibir's monthly secretariat meeting in February 2025 decided to suspend Ammar's "Sathi" membership over allegations of moral misconduct, neglect of basic religious duties, freely mixing with women, illegal financial transactions and involvement in activities contrary to the organisation's aims and objectives.
The letter said the September 2025 monthly secretariat meeting later decided to cancel his "Sathi" membership after he failed to adequately respond to the allegations.
The letter also expressed concern that Ammar's activities and alleged involvement in "criminal activities" could create instability on campus. It said his "provocative activities" could also push the university towards conflict.
Signed by Shibir's RU unit President Mujahid Faisal, the letter instructed Shibir leaders to stop communicating with Ammar. It also instructed activists to avoid Ammar in their online and offline activities and refrain from making any negative comments or reactions about him.
It also urged elected Rucsu office-bearers not to maintain organisational ties with Ammar and asked Shibir activists at all levels to sever contact with him.
Ahmed Munshi, sports secretary of the unit's 2025 committee, and two other leaders of its current committee confirmed the authenticity of the letter to The Business Standard today (30 September).
A Shibir leader, speaking on condition of anonymity, said an investigation committee had been formed to look into various allegations against Ammar, including the theft of laptops from a city corporation building, trading in positions in the metropolitan Chhatra Shakti unit and financial irregularities.
Asked about Ammar's political background, the leader said Ammar had originally been a "Sathi" of Shibir's Tamirul Millat Madrasah unit and worked with Alternative Literature - a cultural organisation at Rajshahi University.
The leader claimed that the organisation was primarily run by Shibir members and that Ammar had been formally involved with Shibir until after the July Uprising in 2024.
Another Shibir leader, also speaking on condition of anonymity, said the organisation initially suspended Ammar's membership under its rules and sought his response to the allegations. The decision to cancel his membership was taken after he failed to adequately respond, the leader said.
The latest letter was issued after further alleged irregularities were observed and amid concerns over Ammar's conduct, the leader added.
Previously, Ammar has repeatedly denied having any affiliation with Shibir.
He was elected Rucsu general secretary from the "Anti-Dominance Unity" panel, which was widely discussed as a "dummy panel" of Shibir during the 2025 Rucsu election.
He later drew controversy over several campus incidents, including multiple mob incidents, alleged irregularities in financial transactions involving Rucsu funds and incidents in which students were beaten.
During that time, Shibir's RU unit said at a press conference that it would not take responsibility for Ammar.
This reporter made several attempts to contact Ammar for comment, but received no response.
