Swechchhasebak Dal stage protest in Shahbag over deteriorating law and order situation
Demonstrators reached Shahbag and blocked the intersection around 6:15pm, halting traffic for nearly 15 minutes
The Jatiotabadi Swechchhasebak Dal blocked Dhaka's Shahbag intersection this evening (15 July), demanding action against deteriorating law and order and what they termed as a "conspiracy to destabilise the country."
Around 4pm, a rally was held in front of the BNP central office Naya Paltan, where Swechchhasebak Dal President SM Zilani and General Secretary Rajib Ahsan led the gathering.
Following the rally, a protest march headed towards Shahbag via Kakrail and TSC.
Demonstrators reached Shahbag and blocked the intersection around 6:15pm, halting traffic for nearly 15 minutes.
Before starting of the rally, all routes leading to Shahbag had been cordoned off, causing severe traffic gridlock in adjacent areas including Dhanmondi, TSC, Karwan Bazar, Banglamotor, and New Market. Commuters faced significant disruption.
The protest was called to denounce what the party described as administrative indifference and escalating political repression nationwide.
The event was also joined by BNP Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel and several thousand party members.
