NCP for adding the word 'election-time' in caretaker govt name
Stating that NCP wants an election of the legislature, which will also have a mandate from the constituent assembly, Hasnat further said both the legislature and the constituent assembly will have status, which will rewrite the constitution and carry out the routine activities of the parliament
The word "Election-time" must be added in the formal name of the caretaker or interim government, leaders of the National Citizen Party said today (19 April).
"We have primarily proposed that the interim government has to be called an election-time interim or caretaker government. Through this demand, we have emphasised the role of the interim government during elections," NCP Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain said.
"We have also discussed the outline of this government and the positions of the chief adviser or other advisers in our preamble," he said while talking to reporters during the lunch break of a dialogue with the National Consensus Commission at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Complex today (19 April).
Akhtar said, "We have discussed the constitution-related issues. Discussions on administration, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the judiciary are yet to begin."
"We have asked why police reports have not been presented. Detailed discussions have been held regarding rewriting the constitution and the reality of a constituent assembly election. We will inform the media if we can reach a conclusion through continuous discussions," he added.
"The mandate of the interim government asks them to arrange elections after making trials and reforms visible, which we have emphasised. The government will get time according to their activities," Akhtar further said.
Hasnat Abdullah, chief organiser (south) of NCP, said, "We have agreed on a total of 129 proposals out of 166 presented by the reform commissions. Although we have agreed, there will still be our opinions on these matters."
"We have discussed three issues today. Firstly, we want people's rights to be supreme. Secondly, we want a peaceful transition of power, which we have discussed broadly as a civil war-like situation prevails whenever there is a transition of power," he said.
"Finally, we have talked about the stability of Jatiya Sangsad. Discussion was held on how the Jatiya Sangsad can be more effective through Article 70 of the constitution and giving freedom to the members of parliament," he added.
Stating that NCP wants an election of the legislature, which will also have a mandate from the constituent assembly, Hasnat further said both the legislature and the constituent assembly will have status, which will rewrite the constitution and carry out the routine activities of the parliament.
Replying to a question, he said, "Unity has to be created through discussions, while the reasons behind the July uprising have to be understood. We have to reach an agreement for the sake of our national interests."
Sarwar Tushar, chief of the coordination committee of NCP, said, "We are still standing by our demand that no one will be able to become prime minister more than twice."
Earlier today, National Citizen Party (NCP) demanded radical change in the state structure through reforms to fulfil the aspirations of the July mass uprising and ensure no fascism and autocratic tendency among future governments.
"By reform, we mean fundamental reform and the reforms which will bring a radical change and a qualitative change in the structure of the state," said NCP Convener Nahid Islam.
He made the remarks at his opening speech at the talks with the National Consensus Commission at the LD Hall of the National Parliament Building.
An eight-member NCP delegation led by Convener Nahid Islam attended the talks, which began at around 11am with the commission's Vice Chairman Ali Riaz in the chair.
The meeting is part of an ongoing series of discussions with political parties on the interim government's state reform initiatives.
