Inside today’s bridal showers: Dresses, styling and the details that matter
This wedding season, bridal showers in Dhaka are all about soft, feminine silhouettes that balance style with a modern touch, where comfort is just as important as aesthetics
If you are a bridesmaid this wedding season, chances are you have already felt the mix of excitement and the immense responsibility that comes with planning a bridal shower. Each decision revolves around celebrating the bride in a way that reflects her style and personality.
While cafes and restaurants offer convenience, many hosts now opt for the creative freedom of Airbnb or the intimacy of home sleepovers to set the perfect tone.
To navigate the complexities of planning, many turn to professionals like Kazi Sadia Fardin Haque Adiba, founder of Adiba The Dream Maker. Since 2017, she has seen bridal showers evolve into highly curated events.
While premium packages can reach Tk 200,000, Adiba notes that basic professional setups start around Tk 17,000. "At this price, the setup includes a low table arrangement, a backdrop, and a cake table for 12–16 guests, all designed to match the chosen theme."
These themes often lean into dreamy aesthetics like Bridgerton, cottagecore, or garden parties, heavily featuring pastel palettes like lilac and baby pink. As these visual themes define the room, they naturally must complement the day's fashion.
Dress of the day
Lightweight dresses remain a favourite for their flattering cuts and airy feel.
Farzana Alam, an employee of 'Thailand Haul', a shop that specialises in westernwear, noted, "Brides and bridesmaids are increasingly choosing flowy maxi and midi dresses with wrap designs, elasticated waists, corset-style bodices, and statement sleeves, combining elegance with ease of movement."
She added that bridesmaids nowadays often wear coordinated colours to create a unified backdrop, while the bride stands out in richer tones with details such as ruffles, pleats, or delicate beadwork.
Maheema Akter, a newlywed, shared that she had always envisioned her bridal shower look to be soft, feminine, and elegant. She explained, "I had noticed that pastel shades were very popular, with colours like blush pink, powder blue, mint, pistachio, lilac, and butter yellow leading the way."
She shared that for her shower, her friends brought her vision to life, dressing her in a soft and bright pink off-shoulder gown, while her bridesmaids wore matching A-line gowns in pastel lilac, creating a harmonious and picture-perfect combination.
Sharis remain popular while being reimagined with a contemporary twist. Ready-made options from brands like TRIBE are favoured for their variety in fabrics and styles, while traditional sharis are often tailored into ready-to-wear versions.
Lightweight fabrics such as organza, chiffon, soft net, and satin-blends are preferred.
Fish-cut petticoats with built-in shapewear are increasingly used to create a flawless drape, smoothing the waist and hips while allowing pleats to fall neatly, offering structure without the bulk of traditional underskirts.
Sharis are paired with modern blouses, including corset styles, puff sleeves, halter necks, or structured sweetheart necklines, and finished with slim belts or creative draping.
Subtle details such as floral prints, scalloped or lace borders, minimal embroidery, and micro-sequins add charm without overwhelming the outfit.
Gowns are also gaining popularity, especially for indoor or brunch-style showers. Pinterest-inspired silhouettes such as A-line and fit-and-flare cuts, corset bodices, off-shoulder, sweetheart, or V-necklines, halter styles, puffed or bishop sleeves, and layered ruffles or asymmetric hems are widely requested.
For more relaxed, sleepover-style showers, coordinated PJ sets are increasingly popular.
Satin, silk-blend, or soft cotton sets are often personalised with embroidery, while brides seeking more coverage can pair gowns or Western-style dresses with matching or contrasting chiffon or georgette hijabs.
The right innerwear
According to a SHAPE consultant, choosing the right shapewear is just as important as selecting the outfit, as it can make or break the overall look. At SHAPE, high-waisted shorts, shaping briefs, and lightweight bodysuits made from breathable nylon-spandex are ideal for bodycon styles, smoothing the waist, midsection, and hips without restricting movement.
Nude tones are recommended under pastel or sheer fabrics to remain invisible.
Accessories and more
When choosing accessories, it's best to keep them minimal yet effective. Pearls are a reliable choice, as they can be incorporated through stud earrings, layered chokers or bracelets to add a timeless elegance.
Delicate gold pieces, such as slim bangles, fine chains, or minimalist rings, provide a subtle shimmer that complements both sharis and gowns without overwhelming the outfit.
Belts are increasingly used as both functional and decorative accessories, helping to define the waist over sharis, gowns, or flowy dresses, and creating a polished, tailored silhouette.
Footwear is selected with both comfort and style in mind, with block heels, kitten heels, and embellished flats being popular choices for indoor or brunch-style showers.
Small clutches or handbags in neutral or metallic shades are preferred, offering practicality to carry essentials while remaining subtle and ensuring the focus stays on the outfit and overall styling.
What about makeup
Keya, a professional make-up artist, explained that most bridesmaids prefer soft glam paired with an updo or a tight messy bun, depending on their hair type, preferences, and face structure.
She noted that both brides and bridesmaids often include floral accessories in their hair to complement the overall styling.
In a typical soft glam look, lips are kept light and glossy in pinkish-mauve tones, with a subtle blush and a naturally dewy complexion. Make-up packages for bridesmaids are tailored according to the preferred look.
Keya mentioned that brides also tend to go for soft glam, but she has recently noticed a growing trend of brides opting for bolder lips and decorated eyes. This can involve using stones, rhinestones, crystals, or face jewels along the lash line, under the eyes, or in creative shapes, secured with lash glue or strong liner for a dazzling, eye-catching effect.
The perfect nailset
Nails cannot be forgotten, as every girl dreams of perfectly done nails for special occasions, which complete the overall look. Brides can choose press-ons or extensions, depending on comfort, budget, and lifestyle.
For those who prefer to keep things minimal or are not comfortable wearing nails, a thoughtful alternative is to book a manicure and pedicure at a salon of her choice, keeping her hands and feet polished and photo-ready.
Self-taught nail artist Sameera Zahir, who was also a bridesmaid, explained why she chose press-ons for her friend, the bride-to-be, stating, "Press-ons are easier on the pocket, low maintenance, and reusable, costing between Tk800–2,500."
"However, extensions, on the other hand, last longer but are pricier, as basic sets start at Tk 5,000 and require fillings every two to three weeks, which adds to the cost," she added.
