With the Chittagong University Central Students' Union (Cucsu) election just days away, candidates are in the final stretch of campaigning, filling the campus with activity and anticipation. Among the contenders, the Sufi-inspired 'Ahingsho Shikkharthi Oikya' (Non-violent Student Unity) panel has drawn particular attention with its message of peace and inclusivity.
Campaigning at the Shaheed Minar, tea stalls, and intellectual corners of the campus, the panel led by VP candidate Muhammad Farhadul Islam and AGS candidate Shahidul Islam Shahed has emerged as a distinctive voice alongside the Shibir- and Chhatra Dal-backed panels.
"We are participating to represent general students and ensure their right to vote freely," said Farhadul Islam. "The response has been very positive, and we hope for a fair election." Executive member candidate Muhammad Sabbir Rahman said they are reaching out to all students and are confident of their support.
On 9 October, the panel unveiled a 16-point manifesto centred on anti-violence, representation, and academic reform. Its mandates include making Cucsu elections a regular feature of the academic calendar, ending discriminatory policies based on student identity, and curbing political domination on campus.
The panel also promises teacher evaluations to ensure quality education, expanded shuttle train schedules, construction of new dormitories, food quality monitoring through a rating system, and improved campus security with special focus on women's safety.
Other pledges include free correction of certificates and documents, a computer lab in the Cucsu building, Wi-Fi and security booths across the campus, increased scholarships, financial aid for underprivileged and special-needs students, enhanced ambulance services, and renovated playgrounds to encourage sports.
The panel further commits to professional counselling services for mental well-being and promises transparency by publishing monthly performance reports of elected representatives if voted into office.
