Aynaghar to parliament: Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem wins Dhaka-14
Mir Ahmad, after nearly eight years in enforced disappearance, returns to the political spotlight
Mir Ahmad Bin Quasem, the candidate of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has been declared the winner of the Dhaka-14 parliamentary constituency, according to the Returning Officer Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury.
Mir Ahmad, son of late Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali, survived nearly eight years in enforced disappearance during the Awami League's previous tenure.
He was abducted from Mirpur on 9 August 2016 and released on 6 August 2024, a day after the fall of the Hasina government. His candidacy in the current election marked his return to the political spotlight.
Competing under the "Scale" symbol, Mir Ahmad received 101,113 votes, defeating his closest rival, BNP candidate Sanzida Islam, who garnered 83,323 votes.
A total of 174 polling centers, including postal ballots, were used in the constituency. Mir Ahmad won by a margin of 17,790 votes, the results showed.
The Dhaka-14 constituency covers wards 7 to 12 of Dhaka North City Corporation and the Kaundia Union of Savar upazila.
Out of 456,044 registered voters, 210,312 cast their votes, with 3,356 ballots invalidated, leaving 206,956 valid votes.
A total of 12 candidates contested the seat. Among other contenders, independent candidate Syed Abu Bakar Siddique, running under the "Football" symbol, secured 16,328 votes, while Islami Andolan Bangladesh candidate Md Abu Yusuf, with the "Hand Fan" symbol, received 3,760 votes.
The results were officially announced by Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury at 4am today.
