Political will, global cooperation necessary to protect ozone layer: Rizwana

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan today called for strong political commitment and international collaboration in safeguarding the ozone layer.
Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion marking World Ozone Day at the Department of Environment in the capital's Agargaon, she said the depletion of the ozone layer poses serious threats to human health, agricultural productivity and biodiversity.
Referring to the success of global initiatives, Rizwana, also the adviser of the Ministry of Water Resources, highlighted the role of the Montreal Protocol in curbing the use of harmful chemical substances.
"This is a testament to how international laws can be effectively implemented when backed by political will," she added.
The adviser also said that financial and technological support from developed nations has contributed significantly to global progress in ozone protection.
She observed that similar cooperation is essential in tackling climate change and ensuring a sustainable future through changes in both personal and institutional behaviour.
The event also featured a prize-giving ceremony for winners of a painting competition held in observance of World Ozone Day.
Director General of the Department of Environment (DoE) Dr Md Kamruzzaman presided over the session, while Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Mohammad Navid Shafiullah, DoE Director Md Ziaul Haque and representatives from UNDP also spoke.
