Bangladesh exports first consignment of 37 tonnes of hilsa to India
The government has approved the export of 1,200 tonnes of hilsa to India ahead of Durga Puja

On the occasion of Durga Puja, Bangladesh has begun exporting hilsa to India, with the first consignment of 37.46 tonns leaving through Benapole land port in Jashore's Sharsha upazila.
The shipment, transported in six trucks, entered India's Petrapole port around 12:30am today (17 September), confirmed Benapole Port Director Shamim Hossain.
According to port officials, five Kolkata-based companies — National Trading, FNS Fish, Joy Shantosi, Ma International, and RJ International — imported the fish.
The exporters from Bangladesh include Satota Fish, Swarnali Enterprise, Tanisha Enterprise, Biswas Enterprise, and Lucky Trading.
The government has approved the export of 1,200 tonnes of hilsa to India ahead of Durga Puja, distributing quotas among 37 Bangladeshi companies.
Under the arrangement, one company may export up to 50 tonnes, 25 companies up to 30 tonnes each, nine companies up to 40 tonnes each, and two companies up to 20 tonnes each.
Benapole Fisheries Quarantine Officer Sajeeb Saha said the Ministry of Commerce has instructed that the approved quota be exported between 16 September and 5 October.
Each kilogram of hilsa has been priced at $12.5, equivalent to roughly Tk1,500. The fish being exported weigh between 1.2kg and 1.5kg each.
