Political parties should introduce age limits for their leaders to ensure they do not turn into autocrats, prominent economist Anu Muhammad said today (31 January).

"It is not right that someone gets a permanent post [in a political party] right after they become a leader. The thought of permanency gives birth to autocracy," he said while speaking at a roundtable discussion event titled 'Which way is Bangladesh's democratic transition going?' at the National Press Club in Dhaka.

Therefore, he added that political parties "should have elected representatives at every level and there should be an age limit for these representatives".

The economist also said it is crucial that political parties undergo reforms.

Speaking about the country's economy, he said, "Inequality in the country has increased due to the economic philosophy of the international community. Inequality in the country will not decrease by maintaining a structure dependent on this philosophy."
