"A total of 33,766 different type of vehicles crossed the Jamuna Bridge in the last 24 hours till 12 midnight on Wednesday (26 March) ...During the period, Tk2.78 crore were collected as toll," said Executive Engineer of the Jamuna Bridge site office Ahsanul Kabir Pavel.
He said the toll was collected from the vehicles mostly carrying home-bound passengers on the eve of the holy Eid-ul-Fitr.
Among the transported vehicles, 8,033 were buses, 3,836 were motorcycles, 10,516 were small vehicles and 11,350 were trucks, he added.
Thousands of home-bound people of North Bengal are going to their near and dear ones to celebrate the Eid through this bridge.
This year the home-bound passengers are happy with their Eid journey as there are no any major traffic congestion on the highway.
However, a number of passengers have alleged that the transport authorities have been collecting extra fare from the passengers but the drivers of the vehicles claimed that they were realising the fare fixed earlier.
Engineer Ahsanul Kabir told BSS that the bridge authority has set up 18 toll booths on both sides of the bridge for transporting vehicles, excluding motorbikes, to remove traffic congestion on the highways.
They also set up four separate booths for transporting motorcycles, he added.
Mizanur Rahman, Superintendent of Police (SP) Tangail told BSS that some 750 police personnel including mobile team and motorcycle team have been engaged on the Dhaka-Tangail highway to reduce traffic congestion.
Six wreckers were also deployed on the highway to remove abandoned and inoperative vehicles from the road on emergency basis, the SP added.
