Nuzhat Anwar appointed new managing director of Dhaka Stock Exchange
The top executive post at the DSE had remained vacant since May last year, following the resignation of ATM Tariquzzaman, with the exchange being run by interim arrangements during the period
The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) today (18 December) approved the appointment of Nuzhat Anwar as the new managing director of Dhaka Stock Exchange PLC (DSE) for a three-year term, ending a prolonged leadership vacuum at the country's premier bourse.
The top executive post at the DSE had remained vacant since May last year, following the resignation of ATM Tariquzzaman, with the exchange being run by interim arrangements during the period.
Nuzhat Anwar brings more than two decades of experience spanning financial markets, banking and development finance. Prior to her appointment, she served at the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the private sector arm of the World Bank Group, where she held several senior leadership roles across Africa and South Asia.
At IFC, she also worked as a country officer for Botswana and Namibia, where she played a pivotal role in establishing IFC's presence in Gaborone and advancing a sustainable investment programme, including facilitating IFC's first investment in Botswana.
Her professional expertise includes capital management, treasury and liquidity management, transaction services, portfolio optimisation and market advocacy, areas widely seen as critical for the development of Bangladesh's capital market.
Earlier in her career, Nuzhat spent 16 years in the banking sector, holding various senior management positions at Citibank Bangladesh and Standard Chartered Bank Bangladesh.
Welcoming the regulatory approval, DSE Chairman Mominul Islam said the board and its nomination and remuneration committee had worked intensively over the past year to identify a competent leader for the exchange.
He expressed confidence that Nuzhat's leadership qualities, extensive experience in domestic and international financial markets, and strong commitment to capital market transformation would help guide the DSE through its next phase of development.
"We are confident that Nuzhat is the right candidate to lead the DSE in the days ahead," he said, adding that the exchange would now complete the remaining internal processes to onboard her at the earliest possible time.
