A medical centre in Shyamoli, Dhaka, was sealed off and two of its staffers jailed on Saturday for allegedly providing fake medical reports.

A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) mobile court raided the Hypothyroid Centre and found it does not have any proper testing facilities or expert doctors.

The centre was providing pathology reports and prescriptions to patients forging the signature of a doctor who died of Covid-19 in May, said RAB executive magistrate Sarwoer Alam.

Professor Moniruzzaman, who died of Covid-19, had never visited the medical centre, but it had been providing fake reports and prescriptions to patients with his forged signature – even on 19 October, the magistrate added.

During the raid, RAB also seized some blank pathology reports with the signatures of two doctors using advanced dates. However, the owner of the centre fled the spot.

The two jailed staffers of the facility are Sohel Rana and Rassel.

Sarwoer said the medical centre had its networks through which it collected samples from patients – from Dhaka and nearby districts – to test thyroid, hormone and other pathology issues.

Allegedly, without testing the samples, fake reports were then sent to patients through courier services.
