A biker has been killed after his motorcycle crashed with a double decker bus carrying students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) in Savar.

The deceased has been identified as Md Sohrab Hossain, 44, son of Abdul Latif from Gangutia union under Dhamrai upazila in Dhaka.

The victim died while receiving treatment at Enam Medical College Hospital in Savar, said hospital sources.

According to Duty Manager of Enam Medical Sultan Mahmud, the accident took place around 9:45pm yesterday (20 December).

"Sohrab was brought at the hospital in a critically injured condition around 9:30pm. His legs were broken, and he had serious injuries to his head. He was admitted into the neuro ICU where he breathed his last at 11:52pm," Sultan said.

Sub Inspector of Savar highway police station Anzil Ahmed said, "We could not ascertain how the accident really occurred. The eyewitnesses are not being able to tell for sure what happened as the road divider was high. The real incident will be known after watching the CCTV footage of the area. The next steps will be taken as per the directions of the higher authority after knowing the reality of the incident."

According to eyewitnesses, a double decker bus carrying students of JU was returning to the campus using the one-way lane in the middle of the road at Savar's Thana Stand area.

Breaking traffic rules, the bike rider was coming at a high speed from the opposite direction on this lane. The bus driver tried to use his breaks when the two vehicles came face to face but failed as the bus was also speeding. A crash occurred and the bike along with the rider was run over by the bus, eyewitnesses said.

Students later rescued the bike rider in a bloodied state, eyewitnesses added.

Student from JU's 50th batch Khayer Mahmud said, "Our driver had no fault in this incident. While cutting the victim's pant for treatment, the doctor found many sleeping pills."

Bus driver Md Abu Hanif said, "The bike was on the wrong side. Suddenly it overturned in front of my bus. I had used the hard break but to no avail. I had steered carefully so that the bus does not hit the road divider. There was a chance for the students on the bus to fall victim to the accident."

Contacted, Proctor of JU AKM Rashidul Alam told The Business Standard, "Although eyewitnesses have said the accident took place due to the biker coming from the opposite direction, we have asked the officer in-charges of Savar model police station and Savar highway police station to check the CCTV footage of the area and inform us about the reality of the incident. We will take steps accordingly."
